Britney Spears said she is "shocked" after her split with actor Sam Asghari but that it's "nobody's business" in a video post on Instagram Saturday where the singer dances in a neon green bikini bottoms, a black crop top and tall black boots to the song "If" by Janet Jackson.
Asghari, 29, filed his petition to dissolve his 14-month-old marriage to the 41-year-old pop superstar in Los Angeles County court late Wednesday. Like the vast majority of those who file for divorce in California, he cites irreconcilable differences as the reason for the split, according to his divorce filing obtained by The Associated Press.
"As everyone knows, Hesam and I are no longer together … 6 years is a long time to be with someone so, I’m a little shocked but … I’m not here to explain why because its honestly nobody’s business !!!" she wrote.
USA TODAY has reached out to Spears' and Asghari's representatives for comment.
Asghari's filing lists the couple's separation date as July 28, though reports of the split did not emerge until Wednesday. It says he will try to get financial support from her, while blocking her from getting any from him. And it seeks to have her pay for his divorce lawyers.
Spears and Asghari, who tied the knot in June 2022, separated nearly three weeks ago, and Asghari is seeking spousal support and attorneys' fees in their divorce.
She went on to say: "But, I couldn’t take the pain anymore honestly !!! In some sort of telepathic way I have been receiving so many messages that melt my heart from friends and I thank you !!!"
Spears posted a photo of herself smiling while riding a horse on the beach the day after the separation was public, and wrote of her plan to buy a horse. Spears in known for posting videos of herself dancing and twirling in bikinis on Instagram to her 42 million followers.
But on Saturday, she wrote: "I’ve been playing it strong for way too long and my Instagram may seem perfect but it’s far from reality and I think we all know that !!! I would love to show my emotions and tears on how I really feel but some reason I’ve always had to hide my weaknesses !!! "
The filing says the value of Spears' and Asghari's assets, and those they own jointly, has yet to be determined.
Spears and Asghari had no children together. Spears said she and Asghari lost a baby early in her pregnancy in May 2022.
Asghari addressed the couple's breakup on his Instagram stories Thursday, asking fans and the media to be "kind and thoughtful."
"After six years of love and commitment to each other, my wife and I have decided to end our journey together," Asghari wrote. "We will hold onto the love and respect we have for each other, and I wish her the best always."
Britney wrote: "If I wasn’t my dad’s strong soldier, I would be sent away to places to get fixed by doctors !!! But that’s when I needed family the most !!! You’re supposed to be loved unconditionally … not under conditions !!!! So I will be as strong as I can and do my best !!! And I’m actually doing pretty damn good !!! Anyways have a good day and don’t forget to smile !!!"
