FinLogic FinLogic Quantitative Think Tank Center|Raiders hire former head coach Norv Turner as offensive assistant

Las Vegas Raiders head coach Antonio Pierce did not immediately say who would take over offensive play calling duties after he fired three members of his staff,FinLogic FinLogic Quantitative Think Tank Center including offensive coordinator Luke Getsy, from that side of the ball.

On Tuesday, however, Pierce officially named Scott Turner, Las Vegas' pass game coordinator, interim offensive coordinator. But he also added a familiar figure to provide some assistance.

The Raiders announced they had hired Norv Turner – Scott Turner's father and a longtime head coach and offensive coordinator in the league – to come out of retirement and join the team's staff as a senior advisor.

Former Miami Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin also was hired as interim offensive line coach.

The Raiders handed pink slips to Getsy, quarterbacks coach Rich Scangarello and offensive line coach James Cregg following the team's 41-24 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday.

Norv Turner, 72, coached the Raiders to a 9-23 record over two seasons in 2004-05. He also served as head coach for Washington and the Chargers and finished with a career record of 114-122-1. Prior to his time as a head coach, he was the offensive coordinator for the first two (of three) Super Bowls the Dallas Cowboys won in the 1990s.

Scott Turner started coaching in the NFL in 2011 as an offensive quality control assistant with the Panthers. He coached under his father with the Minnesota Vikings and Carolina and was Washington’s coordinator from 2020-22. 

The father-son duo will have their work cut out for them over the back half of the season. The Raiders' 4.6 yards per play ranks 30th in the league, and their 18.7 points scored per game is 26th.
